Sanford Bismarck Medical Center is adding a da Vinci 5 robotic surgery system in downtown Bismarck, Sanford Health announced Sept. 23. The release said the system was scheduled to arrive Oct. 3, and that patient procedures on it would begin only after surgeons and operating room staff complete specialized training.

The Details

  • What: A da Vinci 5 Surgical System, added to Sanford Bismarck's existing robotic surgery equipment. Sanford's release says it will not replace current technology.
  • Where: Sanford Bismarck Medical Center, 300 N. Seventh St., Bismarck, according to Sanford's location page.
  • When: Arrival was scheduled for Oct. 3, per the release. The release does not give a date for the first patient procedures.

What's Different About It

Sanford's announcement highlights the system's force feedback, which it says lets surgeons sense push and pull forces at the instrument tip during surgery. The release also lists enhanced 3D vision, a redesigned surgeon console and significantly increased computing power. It says the system is compatible with many existing da Vinci Xi instruments and workflows.

The release ties the addition to growing demand for robotic-assisted surgery across several specialties. A Sanford operations executive quoted in the release said expanding access to minimally invasive options matters as more surgeons incorporate robotic-assisted techniques into their practice.

The Backstory

Sanford Clinic, a multispecialty clinic at 222 N. Seventh St., is connected to the medical center, according to Sanford's location pages. Sanford has separately announced that one of its Bismarck general surgeons became the first general surgeon in North Dakota to perform more than 1,000 robotic-assisted surgeries.

What It Means for Bismarck–Mandan

Robotic surgery is already offered at the medical center. The change is an additional robotic system there, not a replacement of the existing equipment.

Before You Go

  • Whether a robotic approach suits a given procedure is a question for your surgeon. The release does not say which specialties will use the new unit first.
  • Updates appear on Sanford's newsroom.
