Bismarck State College says former president and President Emeritus Dr. Larry C. Skogen will lead a free public workshop on American Indian education history Thursday, Nov. 12, from 3 to 5 p.m. in Skogen Hall, Conference Room 204, on the BSC campus.
The workshop is presented by Bringing Humanities to Life and is open to BSC faculty, staff, students and the public, according to the college. Skogen Hall is at 1400 Schafer St., Bismarck State College said.
The college says Skogen will discuss the research, writing and publishing of his two-volume collection, “To Educate American Indians,” which examines American Indian education from 1900 to 1909. The first volume covers 1900 to 1904 and received the Western History Association’s 2025 Dwight L. Smith (ABC-CLIO) Award for significant bibliography or research tool; the second covers 1905 to 1909, according to BSC.
BSC says Skogen will address the federal government’s motivations for developing an American Indian school system and historical policies and perspectives that shaped education. He will also discuss lessons and challenges from the research and publishing process, the announcement said.
Skogen served as BSC president from 2007 to 2020 and was named president emeritus upon retirement, according to the college. He holds a doctorate in history from Arizona State University and a master’s degree in history from the University of Central Missouri, BSC said.
