The City of Bismarck says it will begin a long-term effort to manage emerald ash borer impacts on boulevard trees after the pest was confirmed within city limits in August. The Forestry Division posted its initial plan on October 28, 2026.
The plan applies only to ash trees in boulevards and the public right of way, the city said. Over the next four to five years, the city expects to remove about half of those trees, prioritizing them based on condition, structural concerns and public safety.
The remaining boulevard ash trees will receive insecticide treatments on a three-year cycle, according to the announcement. Some treated trees could still be removed later as conditions change; the city said some trees will be treated for their full lives.
The Forestry Division is asking residents who have concerns about a nearby boulevard ash tree’s possible removal or treatment to get in touch, the city said. The city plans to replant where space and infrastructure allow, while a detailed replanting plan is still being finalized.
Residents can call the Forestry Division at 701-335-1700, option 3, or email [email protected] to ask questions or report a boulevard ash tree of concern, according to the announcement. More information is available at bismarcknd.gov/Forestry.
