The City of Bismarck has taken a major step toward upgrading its law-enforcement infrastructure by approving the first of three payments—totaling $5 million—toward purchasing a 9.8-acre parcel of land at the intersection of Century Avenue and Valley Forge Street in northeast Bismarck for a new police headquarters. Construction of the new facility is expected to begin in 2027.
For decades, the existing headquarters of the Bismarck Police Department at 700 South 9th Street has served as the center of operations, but growing personnel numbers (136 sworn officers today vs. 63 in 1989) and evolving mission requirements have prompted city leaders to plan for a modern, larger facility.
The new site in northeast Bismarck was selected because it offers space for long-term growth and better centralization of critical assets. The purchase was made possible through a strategic reallocation of city reserves approved by the City Commission in 2023 as part of the 2024 budget planning. The facility’s construction will be supported by a voter-approved sales tax initiative passed in November 2024.
In addition, city officials note that maintaining the old station for training or secondary purposes could reduce the size (and cost) of the new building while preserving a police presence in south Bismarck.
With a modern headquarters built to support intelligence-led policing and centralized assets, department leaders say the community can expect more streamlined operations and quicker response times. As Chief Jason Stugelmeyer puts it: “This location will allow us to grow with the community… and expand our intelligence-led efforts.”
With this strategic land purchase, the City of Bismarck is laying the foundation for a modern, future-ready police headquarters—one designed to serve its growing community, enhance public safety, and protect taxpayers. Stay tuned as this project advances from blueprint to build, and what it means for Bismarck residents today and tomorrow.
